In today’s technology-driven world everyone wants a website for their business and so people figure out how to do websites using website builders like Wix, Squarespace, Website Builder, Weebly and the list goes on. But, the problem with these supply and demand driven “Website Creators” is 9 times out of 10 they don’t have a clue about Web Design or Web Development. Most of them couldn’t even tell you the difference between HTML and CSS or Jquery UI vs AngularJS, but they charge you an arm and a leg to provide you with a website for your business. As a consumer, how would you know that knowledge of these topics is relevant to the services being provided….you wouldn’t. Hence, why many of you are getting schemed out of thousands of dollars because of fly by night “Website Developers”. So, here at iDigital Solutions, we want to help, not because we want your money, but because we actually care about the growth of your business. Today’s blog will be a short blurb about the difference between Web Design and Web Development and why it matters that your digital marketing provider has both!

Web Design & Web Development Overview

Often times the two terms are used interchangeably, but the truth is the two are completely separate components of the entire website creation process. Web Design deals heavily with the aesthetics of a website: the layout, color scheme, and usability. Web Designers utilize tools like Adobe Creative Cloud to create wireframes(a visual guide that represents the skeletal framework of a website) and other parts of a website. Web Development, on the other hand, deals with how the site functions. In essence, web developers are more like programmers, because they use CSS, HTML, JS(JavaScript), and PHP to make your website function. So what’s the big deal?

What’s the Big Deal?

As the consumer, you should care about the difference because it affects the overall efficiency of your company’s website. A web designer and developer can be one in the same person, but in much larger digital marketing firms they are two different people apart of a larger process. So here’s the deal, if a person or company is designing your website, they should know basic design principles like color theory. In addition, they should also know basic development concepts like HTML and CSS, in order to provide a fully customized website solution. Based on this information, how are so many fly by night “developers/designers” making money. . . .CMS(Content.Management.Systems).

Content Management Systems can be a blessing and a curse….depending on who is using it. For instance, at iDigital Solutions, we have seen robust websites built on platforms like WordPress, however these sites are not highly ranked on google search. Low rankings directly effect the web traffic volume of your website. These sites are ranked low because many consumers utilize over the counter website providers. . . .who know nothing about topics like SEO(Search Engine Optimization). Ok ok so we’ve got pretty technical already, so before we take off just remember to make sure you’re investing in quality services(web developers & designers) who are knowledgeable about the ins and outs of this field. Your website could be the difference between making one-hundred dollars and a million!
